The summer heat is getting to you. It is getting to me. It is getting to everybody. You feel like you can’t do anything apart from complain about this heat, don’t you? Well, here is something that you may be able to do to cool yourself and other members of your family and friends and provide a short but welcome respite from this heat. Make a Virgin Mojito!
Its Level 1. If you know how to mix stuff and handle a knife in the most basic way possible, then this mocktail recipe is for you.
The Magic Ingredients:
✓ 10-15 mint leaves
✓ 1/2 lemon
✓ 1/2 tbsp sugar or sugar syrup
✓ Ice – take as much as you need.
(The quantity of mint, lemon and sugar is given for one person. Just multiply it with the number of people you are making the drink for in order to get the quantity you desire.)
✓ Wash the mint leaves and chop them, but not finely unless you want to chew on them along with your drink.
✓ If you have a small mortar and pestle for the purpose of crushing, then put the chopped leaves in the mortar. Otherwise, you can even use a small bowl.
✓ You can choose to squeeze out the juice of half a lemon in the bowl, or you can choose to cut half of the lemon in small wedges and add them to the bowl. Choose the latter option. Its more fun!
✓ Now, using a pestle, muddler or spoon (depending on the availability of items in your kitchen) crush the lemon wedges and the mint leaves. By crushing the leaves, you will be releasing the essential mint oils which will add flavour to your mojito. You are not required to make a fine paste. Just bruising it will be effective. Also, if you are no good with appliances, I really don’t see why you cant simply use your hands for this purpose 😛
✓ Empty this mixture of lemon and mint into a glass. Take care to ensure that the lemon juice doesn’t fall out.
✓ Add half a tablespoon of sugar syrup to this. I prefer sugar syrup over sugar, but, if you don’t have the syrup prepared, I would not urge you to make it in this heat. Instead, just use sugar. You will only have to make sure that all the sugar is dissolved in the drink. You could also choose to crush it along with the mint and lemons.
✓ Add the ice to the glass. In case you wanna have some more fun, put 5-6 ice cubes on a napkin, then fold the napkin and hold it in a manner that the ice cubes form a lump in the center. Now bang it against something hard till you crush the ice. You now have cool crushed ice. Voila!
✓ Top it all off with sprite, mix it up with a spoon (make sure the sugar is dissolved if you have used sugar), add a straw if you have one and drink, drink, drink.
You have to only work with cold ingredients, not use fire in any of the preparation steps, spend a maximum of 10 minutes in the heat of the kitchen and you will land up with an amazing, cold and refreshing drink. Its win-win in every direction that I look. Also, if you want to increase the cooling factor, you can add a couple of cucumber slices to your prepared drink.
