What’s it about?
Reach Ballygunge Phari, get annoyed by the cacophony of sounds at this gloriously noisy junction in our city and then walk into Cafe Pranah. Your mind will be purged of all annoyance and irritation as you enter this calm space dedicated to serenity and spirituality. And your body will feel the delight of fresh, natural, healthy and delicious food as soon as you put any of the fares offered by the cafe in your mouth.
Rahul Arora has been running Bon Appetit in Kolkata for years now and anybody who has been there will be pleasantly surprised to know that the same man has opened a joint in Kolkata which focuses on health food rather than the kind of food one finds in a regular cafe. So, here, you won’t be getting your pastas and pizzas, but what you will get will enhance your senses.
Cafe Pranah was conceived out of a challenge. The owner of a food joint like Bon Appetit, how could he possibly open up a cafe with the peaceful ambience of a hill-station and the kind of food that most cafe-goers would not expect to find on the menu? But, the proprietors saw the need of a place which is different from the rest, a place which promotes a form of conscious eating, a place where people can truly relax and enjoy the chants floating in the atmosphere. And thus, Cafe Pranah was born.
Normally, people cringe when they hear the term “healthy food”. As Rahul Arora puts it, they think that it is all boiled, bland and tasteless. The food here shows you that it does not necessarily have to be so. After spending some time at the cafe, you will find yourself relaxed, de-stressed, savouring your food and drink. This place shows you that chocolate and cheese is not the only stuff that tastes goooooood. But, Pranah does not promote, dieting. It promotes a form of conscious eating, where you are aware of what you are consuming. After all, there wouldn’t be desserts at a diet cafe and this place has them!
What to eat?
A menu that took 8 months to create is surely going to impress you. There is an enormous range of wraps, burgers and salads to choose from, or you could always pick your own ingredients. The tortillas for the wraps are made from 5 grains and are healthy and deliciously thin, making the wrap not just about the outside, but much much more about the inside. The burger buns are baked especially for Cafe Pranah, and are made of brown multi-grain bread. And if you add Pranah’s nut and seed mix to your salad, then you will be adding a whole new dimension to your food, both in terms of taste and texture. The cafe has 13 different handmade dressings (such as Sweet Chili and Mango, Pepper Yoghurt and more) which have been specially designed to add an unparalleled level of flavour to your food. The technique of flavour layering has been used in the creation of these dressings, so your mouth will constantly experience new wonders even after you have taken a sip of water.
There are a few Indian street food items on the menu too, with a healthy twist. So, try out the wraps and burgers, but definitely indulge on the salad. The crunch of the veggies are a testimony to their freshness and the dressings will complete transform this under-appreciated food item.
What to drink?
Cafe Pranah has a very impressive line-up of beverages. With flavours like orange, carrot, lemongrass, rose-petals and wildberry infused in your tea, you will be spoiled for choice. Their range of tea is specially designed by Goodwyn. The smoothie selection is also very inviting. The Mango Basil Cheesecake smoothie is to die for.
What to do?
Cafe Pranah can be praised without an end for the amazing new transformation it brings to the cafe culture of our city, not only in terms of food, but also in terms of ambience. This place is the perfect spot to unwind and have a deep conversation with someone. It soothes you, takes away the stress from your mind and body and purges your emotions so that you can truly open up and speak your mind. This is partly due to the food and very largely due to the playlist, which comprises mostly of chants of a hypnotic nature.
And, if you are done with talking and eating, you can always step outside and read some of the many tags tied on a grill. They are the feedbacks given by the past customers, and even though the weather has faded most of the words, there are still a few which give you a glimpse at another man’s experiences. It is, after all, extremely poetic.
