What made the actor?
Did John Christopher Depp know when he was 12 that he would become the illustrious Johnny Depp of today?
Did he intend to become an actor?
Depp had a troubling and disturbing youth full of loss, loneliness and instability. He got hooked to the world of drugs and alcohol at a young age and was all set to deny the future of his amazing creative potential. However, the strength of the potential could not be stubbed out by the effect of narcotics and it found its first release on the strings of a guitar. Funnily enough, acting was never Depp’s true calling. He was introduced to this field by his then wife, Lori Anne Allison, and her friend, Nicolas Cage, as a probable source of income after his band, The Kids, fell apart. Really makes you wonder how many characters would have been denied his touch if he had not found his way to Hollywood. *shivers*
Acting style –
Depp is Deep. Period.
The characters he portrays on screen are multi-layered. He is best when he is playing a man with an eccentric mind – the role that any actor would find challenging is the role that Depp looks forward to playing. His body and face can bring out the subtleties of a personality and portray it to the audience with a clarity that not even clear-cut dialogues can offer. His prowess is made evident by the fact that even the most complex and inexplicable of personalities are never left misunderstood or indecipherable if played by Johnny Depp.
What makes him special?
The T.V. series, 21 Jump Street, which made him a teen idol and catapulted him to fame, was despised by him because he considered it to be beneath him. As an actor, he does not look for the fame or the fortune associated with his profession. Instead, he longs for the challenge. While preparing for the role that he has signed on for, he prefers to make a painting of the character as it looks in his mind. Like, literally with paints and brushes on a canvas. Quirky, right? But, if it helps him create people like the Mad Hatter and Jack Sparrow, please continue Mr. Depp!
Most acclaimed works –
He is considered as one of the most accomplished actors of our time, and for good reason. He has received worldwide critical acclaim for his portrayal of the character of Ed Wood in Ed Wood, Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Joseph D. Pistone in Donnie Brasco (where he spent time with the actual Pistone as part of his research for the role) and J. M. Barrie in Finding Neverland. The Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland were huge box-office hits.
